John 17:4 I glorified you on earth
From Thayer’s Greek Lexicon
to make renowned, render illustrious, i. e. to cause the dignity and worth of some person or thing to become manifest and acknowledged
Jesus made the Father’s glory visible for those with eyes to see.
John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
Same meaning as verse 4. Jesus’ glory is manifest, acknowledged, visible in the heavenly throne room. It is (largely) hidden from people on earth because their eyes are veiled.
John 17:6 I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world
From Helps Word Studies
ónoma – name; (figuratively) the manifestation or revelation of someone’s character, i.e. as distinguishing them from all others. Thus “praying in the name of Christ” means to pray as directed (authorized) by Him, bringing revelation that flows out of being in His presence.
According to Hebrew notions, a name is inseparable from the person to whom it belongs, i.e. it is something of his essence. Therefore, in the case of God, it is specially sacred (Souter)
Note that Moses was not allowed to know God’s name (Exodus 3:13-14)
John 17:11-13 Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Your name – see above
My joy – Psalm 16:11 Hebrews 12:2
that they may all be one (vs 21) – not only unity of belief. (“be in us“).
It is a unity of love, of intimacy.
The glory that you have given me I have given to them (vs 22)
He wants us to share in the glory of God.
so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me (vs 23)
This glory will be the sign to the world that Jesus came from the Father.
with me where I am (vs 24)
This glory will be fulfilled in the age to come
I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them (vs 26)
He wants us to taste, see, experience His love.
This experiential knowledge of God’s love comes from the Holy Spirit and points forward to the age to come.
