John 17:1-5

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”

When Jesus had spoken these words
  • What words had Jesus just spoken? ( John 16:32-33 )
  • Why would he follow up these words with a prayer for his disciples?
Father, the hour has come
glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you
  • See John 13:31-32
  • When Jesus asks the Father to glorify him, do you think he is speaking about Jesus’ death, his resurrection, or both?
  • Why does he add “that the Son may glorify you“? How is God glorified in the events to come?
And this is eternal life

A more literal way of translating the words “eternal life” would be “age-long life”,

  • What does this tell us about the nature of eternal life?
  • How does this contrast with this life we now experience?
  • In speaking of “age-long life”, to what age would Jesus be referring? ( Ephesians 2:7, Matthew 19:28-29 )
  • The literal meaning of “new world” in Matthew 19:28 is “regeneration” or “rebirth“. What does this tell you about what is coming?
that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent
  • What kind of knowledge is Jesus talking about here?
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do
  • What work?
Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed
  • What does this make you think of?
  • What does this tell us about our own destiny?
